Dogs chew during teething, to explore, to relieve boredom and to settle themselves. The appropriate outlet depends on age, size, health and chewing style. Some dogs nibble gently while powerful chewers can break unsuitable toys quickly.
Choose and supervise
- Select a product large enough that it cannot be swallowed whole.
- Avoid items that splinter or break into sharp pieces.
- Supervise the first sessions with any new chew.
- Remove it when worn small enough to become a choking hazard.
Provide exercise, enrichment and interaction as well as chew items. Sudden destructive chewing, chewing non-food objects or signs of mouth pain should be discussed with a veterinarian.
