How to Help a Dog That Is Afraid of Nail Trimming

Overgrown nails can affect posture and joint comfort, but nail care should not become a struggle. Begin with very short sessions and stop before the dog becomes overwhelmed.

  1. Build comfort with touch: gently touch paws and nails, then reward calm behaviour.
  2. Introduce the tool: let the dog see and hear the clipper or grinder at a comfortable distance.
  3. Work one nail at a time: briefly touch or trim, reward, and end the session while it is still successful.

Regular walks on suitable firm surfaces may naturally reduce some nail growth. If the dog shows intense fear or there is uncertainty about the quick, ask a veterinarian or experienced groomer for help.
